…is still online, over at GoComics.com! Like other completed strips, it’s in perpetual reruns, but it’s a great trip down memory lane.
Another strip that I was reading as a wee small child, I remember loving the talking animals interacting with kids and adults alike. How much I missed, not having any context at all for the commentary Breathed injected into his work back then. Compared to Doonesbury, though, I have to admit I prefer Bloom County, and not just for the anthromorphized animals. I’ve never been too interested in the U.S. political processes, finding them rather absurdist at times. Breathed applied something very close to that same silliness to politics and any other current events that he spoofed in the strip, whereas Doonesbury has always taken a bit more grounded an approach.
After Bloom County folded, Breathed of course brought selected characters back in his strip Outland, and then later Opus the penguin continued in his own strip until 2008. While Bloom County began in 1980, Opus didn’t come along until the following year. At times I’ve really identified with the character, feeling that we had a similar desperation to find a niche in life and be happy.
A final thought…does anyone else think that Steve Dallas and Rob from Get Fuzzy must be cousins or something?
